Joshua Epstein began playing the violin at the age of eight as a student of Yariv Ezrahi[1]. After graduating from high school and briefly attending university (mathematics), he went to the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Bruxelles to continue his studies, studying with Arthur Grumiaux, and later at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth (an institution for highly gifted musicians) with André Gertler. In 1965 he won second prize at the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki[2], and in 1968 he won first prize in the Carl Flesch Competition in London (City of London Competition). Other prizes followed, such as in the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth (Brussels, 1967 & 1971)[3] and Premio Paganini (Genoa, 1965 & 1969).
